The Last Man on Earth is Lame. (UPDATE!)

So it seems the good folks over at Cracked also decided to comment on the whole "screwing up 'I Am Legend'" issue. Apparently, the original cut of the film called for a different ending, which, to some degree, touches on the novel's central theme. It's not quite as good as the book's finale, but it appears that the blame for radical difference between the final cut and the novel lies primarily with the film's producers and test audience.
